Let’s be real.  It’s fricking hard to be healthy as a flight attendant! 

 

I remember in the last week of my Flight Attendant training, one teacher casually mentioned that the flight attendant lifestyle was fun but unhealthy.  I rolled my eyes.  “Sure,” I thought, “maybe unhealthy for other people, but OBVIOUSLY I won’t have a problem.”   

 

It didn’t take me long to see why I had been warned!

Getting drowsy at 3:30am on a red eye from LAX to MIA and NEEDING two sundaes with fudge and whipped cream to keep me awake.  

 

Crew juice in the van after our flights.  Fun coworkers always down to go out for cocktail after cocktail! 

 

Not to mention the food FOMO syndrome!! Since who knows if I’ll ever go back to Guyana, obviously I better order the fried cassava balls, the soursop margarita AND the pumpkin curry special, right?!

 

The hardest part was reserve, especially airport standby.  The anxiety of having no idea where I would go made me want to snack and snack and snack.  

 

So I did.  In every galley.  in every admiral’s club.  And in every hotel room.  Until a month later my uniform barely fit me anymore! 

 

I had a big wake up call one morning when the zipper on my skirt bulged when I tried to close it.  


“Jenny.” I told myself.  “You’re not continuing down this path any longer.  This job is amazing!  And you’re not giving it up.  So you’ve got to learn how to be healthy as a flight attendant!”

The problem was: how?!  Everything I had previously studied about wellness and nutrition didn’t seem to apply to our sky lifestyle. 

Ayurveda, the ancient Indian science of health and sister science to yoga, recommends we go to sleep each night at 9:30pm and wake up at 5:30am.  As a flight attendant? I wish!!!

 

Eat 3 fresh, nutritious meals a day cooked shortly before you’re ready to enjoy them.  LOL!!! 

 

Make sure to eat tons of fresh fruits and vegetables?  Um, the fruit cup at the airport is 12$.  And what about customs?  

 

Make sure to always get 6-8 hours of quality sleep every evening.  BAHAHHAHAHAHAHA!!

 

Avoid caffeine.  YEAH RIGHT!!!!.  Avoid alcohol too.  You’re killing me!! How else can I unwind after spending hours dealing with that crazy lady in 35C?  

 

And try to get 30 minutes of cardio a day! Dude, I woke up at 3:30am, worked 3 flights, and now it’s 7:30pm and I have to wake up again in another 7 hours. And you’re telling me to go to the gym!?

I knew it wasn’t going to be easy to make this lifestyle healthy. But the optimist in me said it had to be possible!

So over the next year, I made it my mission to figure out how the heck one could be healthy at this dream job!

I asked all my coworkers for their hacks.  Then to fill in the gaps, I used my creativity, a lot of trial and error, and eventually came up with a system that worked!  

A system which is easy, not too time consuming, and allows me to glow every day! 

Once I learned how to be healthy as a flight attendant, everyone wanted to know my secrets!! 

So I decided to combine my skills as a wellness coach with my experience as a flight attendant.  And create a program to empower other flight attendants to go from struggling to soaring!
