Itchy Scratchy Skin No More
When I lived on the mosquito-y shores of Bahia, Brazil, I knew exactly why my skin itched at night. But a couple of years ago, despite living in a mosquito free apartment, my skin was been itchier, scratchier, ouchier than even the buggiest month in Bahia. What was going on?
Winter itch. It’s real. That dry, flaky, burning skin that you have to scratch, or else.
So why does our skin get so dry and itchy in the winter? The main cause is dry air. It’s freezing, so we shut our windows and turn on the heat. The hot, dry air dries out our skin without any outside moisture to hydrate it.
If you’re a cold-o-phobe like me, you’re probably not feeling very “chill” right now. Does this mean I have to open my windows? Or spend more time outside? Don’t worry. While fresh air certainly helps, here are some warmer remedies that will moisten up that scaly skin real fast.
1. Bath of the Goddesses: This miracle remedy comes courtesy of yoga teacher Sarah. Add a tablespoon of coconut oil to a warm/hot bath. Mix it around well with your hands. Soak, and let the coconut oil nourish your skin all over. I recommend dunking your head underwater as well if you suffer from dry scalp like me. Healed!
2. Succulents don’t suck: To bring moisture inside your living space without having to open your window, invest in some plants. Any plant will do, but succulents are the best! They LOVE hot, dry climates like a winter apartment. And in addition to holding more moisture than regular houseplants, they are the chillest plants in town. Water them once every month or two and they’re happy as me in Brazil!
3. Fat= bliss: Attention avocado lovers. Eating healthy, plant based fats is a great way to nourish your body and skin. In addition to avocado toast, try drizzling a tablespoon of olive oil over butternut squash soup, or my favorite, add some almond butter or coconut oil to your morning oatmeal.
4. Love on yourself: Did I mention I love coconut oil? In case you don’t have time for a coconut oil bath (or even if you do!) take a dollop of coconut oil, melt it into your hands, and spread it all over your lizard skin.
5. Namaste!: If you’re feeling cold and stressed in the winter you’re not alone. Unfortunately, stress exacerbates skin issues, and many of the vices we ingest to “combat” stress: alcohol, chocolate, dairy, just make it worse. As tempting as it is to hibernate all winter, the best way to de-stress is to stay active: Running, biking, dancing, indoor swimming, martial arts, etc. And of course yoga. Most yoga classes are a perfect solution since they combine movement with deep breathing and meditation. And the room is so warm. Don’t have time for an hour of yoga? Try the “Calm” app which has short guided meditations. Or just take 5 deep breaths whenever you can. Your skin will cry tears of gratitude.
These remedies will help solve generic winter itch. If you’re suffering from severe, intensely painful rashes, it might be a sign of eczema, rosacea or other skin conditions. If so, schedule a session with me and I can support you in detoxing your body, mind, and soul!
Wishing you all a healthy, happy, and moisturized holiday season and New Year!
