How to avoid dry skin and lips when flying
Hello gorgeous beings!! Do you find yourself getting dry skin or lips when flying? You're not alone!!
According to Ayurveda, the sister science to Yoga, travel increases our “Vata” (air) energy. Vata (air) energy is dry, which can lead us to feel like all the water is being sucked out of our bodies!!
Without engaging in practices to counteract the drying energy, we sky beings can suffer from snake-like scaly skin, crackly lips, and constipation (drying out in the digestive system), ouch!!
But fear not goddess! I’ve got some tips for you to stay moisturized and nourished, from the inside out!!
1. Stay hydrated!! The best way to do this is to drink plenty of spring water, ideally in the form of warm teas!!
Warm tea is nourishing, grounding, and a great way to counteract that flighty Vata/air energy. My favorite in-flight teas are ginger, chamomile, lavender, cardamom, or fennel!
But Jenny, how do I make teas made with spring water in the airport? I thought the only way to have tea is with that nasty spigot of airplane hot “water”.
NOOOOOOOO boo please don’t touch that toxic “water! Here are a couple of options to make nourishing in-flight teas that make your body glow with joy!
a. Bring an empty thermos from your home. Once you pass through security, stop at a coffee shop in the airport and ask them to fill it up with hot water. Usually they’ll do it for free! Just make sure to leave a sweet tip for the kind barista nourishing you!
Then add a tea bag to the cap, pour in the hot water, and hydrate away!
I recommend Stanley brand thermoses, since they will literally keep your water boiling for 24 hours!
b. Pack a collapsible water boiler and travel mug in your suitcase. After you pass through security, buy a bottle of water. Plug in your water boiler to an outlet in the airport and make yourself a cup of love!
c. And if you’re a flight attendant like me and your bag is already too fricking heavy to add new appliances, try this hack!
Take one of the airplane coffee pots and rinse it out. Then fill it with the bottled water you serve to the passengers. Put it in the oven on 375F/190C for about 15 minutes.
Just make sure you use a pot holder when you take it out of the oven since the handle is SUPER hot. And leave the pot holder around the handle if you put it back on the warmer so none of your coworkers burn themselves!!
2. Oil it up! In sanskrit, the word oil (sneha) is the same word for love. And for us flight attendants, isn’t this the TRUTH?!
By enjoying healthy oils in our foods and on our skin, we’ll feel so much more vibrant, lubricated, and glowing!
One nourishing way to add oil/love to your life is in nourishing curries or soups made with coconut oil/milk. Here’s a great grounding recipe to try!!

Another is to roast veggies in a plant based oils like olive, coconut, or sesame to your roasted veggies. Here’s a recipe for my yummy roasted veggie delights!!

Or else my favorite–dice up some avocados and arrange them like jewels of yumminess atop whatever you're eating.
A final favorite of mine is to drizzle a tablespoon of olive oil on top of pretty much everything!! It makes even the blandest dish taste scrumptious, and adds some love to your parched skin.
But Jenny, doesn’t eating too much fat make me fat? I feel your fear love. If you grew up like me in the Fat-phobic era of Olestra and Fat free everything, adding spoonfuls of oils to your meals can cause panic attacks!
But rest in peace love! Fats actually DON’T make you fat! It’s the opposite!
By not getting enough nourishing fats in your diet, your body will often scream out in the form of ice cream, pizza, and cheesecake binges! Avoid this war by adding some plant based fat to every meal!
3. Oil up your skin! Another great way to nourish your parched skin is Abyhanga, ayurveda’s self oil massage. Since oil means love in Ayurveda, rubbing oil all over your skin is like lathering yourself in a blanket of kindness and adoration.
Make sure to use pure oils, since we never want to put anything on our skin we wouldn’t put in our mouth! Some great options are coconut oil (great for the body, just not for the face!), argan oil (my favorite!) jojoba oil, or sesame oil.
Another fabulous method to nourish your skin and relax after a flight is a coconut oil bath!! Not every hotel room has a bath these days, but when they do, and it doesn’t look too dingy, you’re in for a treat! Of course you can also do this at home once you’ve finished your sequence…
As you’re filling up your bath with hot water, place a tablespoon full of coconut oil under the running water. Add 10-15 drops of lavender essential oil, and soak away! You’ll emerge feeling hydrated, nourished, and zen AF!!
